PCB-Containing Equipment
An Important Deadline for Certain Co-ownership Properties
News
Co-ownership syndicates, particularly in older buildings, should pay close attention to an important regulatory deadline concerning certain electrical equipment.
As noted in an information document published by Environment and Climate Change Canada, recent amendments to the PCB Regulations have extended the end-of-use deadline for certain equipment containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to December 31, 2026.
What does this involve?
PCBs are synthetic compounds found in certain types of older electrical equipment, such as:
- transformers,
- light ballasts,
- certain capacitors or hydraulic equipment.
Equipment containing PCBs at a concentration of 50 ppm or more may no longer be used after this date.
What syndicates need to do
Syndicates concerned must:
- identify potentially affected equipment within their building;
- plan for its decommissioning before December 31, 2026;
- ensure proper disposal through authorized channels.
Costs related to replacement, transportation and destruction of this equipment should be anticipated.
For more information, syndicates are encouraged to consult the information document published by Environment and Climate Change Canada on PCBs.
A targeted reminder
This requirement primarily affects older co-ownership properties that may still contain such equipment. For others, no direct impact is expected.
A brief reminder, but an important one to avoid any regulatory non-compliance.
